Cuez at IBC2024 Accelerator Project: The Future of the Control Room

Evolution of the Control Room – Leveraging XR, Voice, AI & HTML-Based Graphics Solutions

As part of the IBC2024 Accelerator Project, Cuez by Tinkerlist played a pivotal role in transforming the traditional control room into a next-generation hub for live production. The project brought together industry leaders like BBC, ITN, and TV2 Denmark, and participants like Cuez, nxtedition, LoopicSPX Graphics, CuePilot, and Erizos.TV. It focused on integrating cutting-edge technologies such as AI, XR, voice recognition, and HTML-based graphics.

The challenge and the objectives

This IBC Accelerator Project aimed to transform and upgrade the traditional control room according to the latest technologies, such as voice commands, generative AI, XR and HTML-based graphics. The difficulty of this challenge was transforming the control room for production teams without them needing to have advanced technical expertise.

The goal was to showcase how through those technologies and shared resources across regional and local hubs, the content can be delivered creatively using any device in any location, with easier, faster, cheaper and more sustainable solutions.

The solution

We discovered that for this to happen, the synergy between digital and traditional linear broadcast platforms is central. And here’s where Cuez came into play. Our innovative automation solutions were crucial in simplifying complex workflows, especially in managing rundowns and real-time triggers. Our platform allowed broadcasters to streamline repetitive tasks, providing a seamless way to organize and trigger HTML-based graphics effortlessly. This not only helped reduce human error but also increased efficiency in live production environments.

During the hackathon organised by the consortium, we managed to demonstrate that AI, XR and HTML-based graphics technologies can greatly assist in show production. For example, through voice control, AI can help the production team find the correct items, determine their timings, and locate them in the rundown.

AI- and XR-powered rundowns can help save valuable time during a LIVE production. That, in turn, reduces human error and makes workflows more efficient. This applies to both on-prem and cloud-based studios. AI-powered rundowns can easily follow the presenter’s voice, read your assets, switching to the following item automatically. And this is truly mind-blowing. With standardized cross-platform HTML graphics in the future, the production of any LIVE broadcast can be simplified without complications or in-depth technical knowledge, allowing teams to focus on creativity and content instead.

Why this matters

This IBC2024 project shows the potential of combining AI-driven automation with flexible control systems, through voice and XR technologies, offering broadcasters new ways to enhance live production. As the industry moves forward, Cuez’s contributions continue to highlight the importance of adaptable, real-time, and cloud-based solutions in the modern control room. It’s high time we adapt the control rooms to current innovations and take full advantage of modern technological advances.
